7 “But the manifestation (Gk phanerosis: exhibition, expression) of the Spirit is given to every man (Gk hekastos: each one separately) to profit (Gk sumphero: bring together; from sun: together and phero: to bring) withal.”
28 “And God hath set some in the church (Gk ekklesia: called out), first (Gk. proton: foremost in time place and order of importance) apostles (apostolos: an ambassador of the gospel, a commissioner of Christ, he that is sent), secondarily prophets (Gk prophetes: divinely inspired foreteller of future events), thirdly teachers, (Gk didaskalos: instructor, doctor, master) after that miracles (dunamis: special miraculous power, ability, abundance, meaning, might, work) then gifts of healings, (Gk iama: a cure effect of healings), helps (Gk antilepsis: relief those appointed to care for poor and sick), governments (Gk kubernesis: directorship in the church), diversities of tongues (Gk glossa: a language unacquired).”

31 But covet earnestly the best (Gk kreitton: stronger, better in degree, nobler) gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
Compare Ephesians 4:11-12
“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers. For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”
(Also read about the ministry gifts in Romans 12:6-8).
Exercise in Tongues Choose A or B
A: Beginner: Create a succinct impactful sentence using four vocabulary words
B: Advanced: Create a cohesive paragraph using vocabulary words from page 1
(See example paragraph below).
Dunamis defined as miracles is not just force but mighty, visible power. If the Apostles preached then signs and wonders followed. When the Prophets spoke of something that was not yet manifested that thing they said, would come to pass. Every man, woman, boy or girl in the church can share their experience with an unbeliever, to teach the truth that Jesus is Lord. Government and administration in the church exist first to edify the saints and to build up the people of God. Even though Pastors and Evangelists are not mentioned in the Corinthian letters they are a part of the diverse gifts of ministry that proceeds from God as found in the Ephesian letters. The best language to discern is the interpreted tongue which edifies the church. The ministry of helps is a high office that profits the downcast in healing a part of society that many do not speak about. Yet, these souls are in need of God. Many of whom we pass every day enroute to our several destinations.

THE DAY OF PENTECOST (a true miracle Acts 2:1-6).
“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
“God authenticated HIS message and the messenger through signs, wonders, and miracles.”
miracles (dunamis: special miraculous power, ability, abundance, meaning, might, work)
sign “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years” (Genesis 1:4).
wonder “And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh” (Exodus 11:10). “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful (Hb pele a miracle, a marvel), Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

“The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.” Psalms 25:14
POV: When a secret is revealed it is no longer a wonder it remains a wonder to those who are not privy to the secret. For example a medical breakthrough is viewed as miraculous in healing a disease that was a severe problem in the past. However, after the initial application and the medicine is applied to heal the masses the breakthrough is no longer considered miraculous (secret) but common (For real life example read the bio of George Washington Carver).
Ministry is to be performed with excellence.
“Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm” (Daniel 6:3).
“And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly” (Acts 18:24,26).
Guidelines for speaking in Tongues
Speaking tongues in the church may cause confusion if no interpretation is given “For God is not the author of confusion but of peace” (I Cor. 14:33). Therefore Paul outlined the following:
- Only two, or at the very most three people were to speak in tongues.
- Only one was to speak at a time.
- Each was to have an interpreter. If no interpreter was present, the person was not to speak.(from I Corinthians 14:27-28)
