Scripture: Luke 9:1-2, 10-11, 23-24
1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
Food for thought
All Apostles are Disciples but all Disciples are not Apostles.
GIVE SPECIFIC INSIGHTS:
As a Disciple cite what you have experienced concerning …
The Preaching of the Kingdom of God
Healing from Disease
Disciples prepare to carry the Gospel message to their generation.
“And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.” Luke 9:6
Receive instruction then perform in the field. Much learning without application makes missed opportunities to show forth the Glory of God.
Disciples are spirit filled and lead by God’s Spirit.
“He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.” Luke 9:20
“And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 16:17
“Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God.” I John 4:2
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Romans 8:14
Disciples understand that there is a price attached to being a disciple.
“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” Luke 9:23
NO PAIN NO GAIN: “Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.” Matthew 20:22 (see Foxes Book of Martyrs).
DEVOTION: The Holy Spirit may also nudge you to do something that takes you out of your comfort zone as the Friend who came at Midnight (Luke 11:5-8).
Disciples who follow a leader closely are promoted.
And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. Luke9: 28 Good Promotions always include better opportunities to serve God.
CONTRAST: “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?” Luke 9: 24-25
What does the cross mean to you?
“Another term for disciple is mentor” (page 507). Elisha was Elijah’s mentor. Elisha gave up his business to follow Elijah and discourage from saying good bye from his parent after his first encounter with Elijah (I Kings 19:20). Elisha even cleaved to Elijah when Elijah asked him to depart. (II Kings 2:2).
Revelation: When the transfer of the anointing comes those who were faithful to the man of God shall receive power to do as their mentor and greater in many cases.
The Expectations of a Disciple of Christ
Jesus declared that we “go therefore and make disciples.” Matthew 28:19Jesus… God declared us not guilty through Christ death on the cross. We are to share this message with unbelievers.
